LANSING--The Michigan Equine Partnership (MEP) has appointed the interim board of directors for the newly formed grassroots organization. After swearing in the 15 member board of directors, the directors elected officers to lead this coalition. Cady Ness-Smith, Eagle, was elected President, Aaron Rice, Battle Creek, was elected Vice President. The secretary is Karen Waite, Lansing, and the Treasurer is Ron Hitzler of Williamston. The board and officers immediately appointed committees to serve the organization.
The board of directors governs the mission, purpose and goals of this grassroots organization that will boost membership, awareness and public support for the equine industry. The board is structured to represent the many different equine interests across the entire industry and state. The first Annual Membership meeting will be held October 9, 2005 which will include a Stallion Access Auction, member dinner and elections of the board of directors.
County ambassadors are being appointed in each of the 83 counties to further promote and educate Michigan residents on the value of the equine industry. A statewide education program is ongoing to the value of the direct and in-direct equine industry to the Michigan economy and agriculture as well as educational for young people involved in equine activities, 4-H and FFA.
“With such a diverse membership, the entire industry is represented, bringing interest in the Michigan equine industry to a new level. The future depends on all aspects of the industry being represented, including retail sales, corporations and other entities that interact with the equine industry. All equine organizations can work in harmony with the Michigan Equine Partnership. We will be most effective if we come together as the collective voice on behalf of the equine industry. By increasing public awareness and support, influencing public policy, and heightening recognition of economic opportunities, the Michigan Equine Partnership will contribute to the economy through continued job growth in agriculture”, said President Cady Ness-Smith.
